George Ayittey, a former National Fellow at the Hoover Institution, is a Distinguished Economist in Residence at American University. He is the author of five books, including Africa Unchained. Dr. Ayittey has also published dozens of articles, and lectured extensively on the problems confounding Africa’s development. Dr. Ayittey is the President of the Free Africa Foundation. His most famous works include the books Africa in Chaos and Why Africa is Poor and Indigenous African Institutions; Africa Betrayed, which won the 1992 H.L. Mencken Award for Best Book; and the forthcoming Developing South Africa After Apartheid. Dr. Ayittey advocates free-market and rule of law solutions to African governments.
He has served as a consultant to the World Bank and U.S. AID, as well as testified before the U.S. Congress on Africa-related issues. His numerous articles have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The Globe & Mail, International Herald Tribune and the London Times. Dr. Ayittey obtained his bachelor’s degree at the University of Ghana, Legon in 1969 and master’s degree in Economics in 1971 in Canada. After a brief teaching stint at the University of Ghana, he returned to Canada in 1975 for his Ph.D. studies at the University of Manitoba. In 1981, he obtained his Ph.D. with an overall GPA of 4:00. |
